The meeting of two totally different medium. Together they create a balance between light and dark, clean and corroded.
Birch tree bark is stunning, but fragile to work with. I built this birch out of steel and did my best to bring the delicate cream, gray and rust color spectrum alive with paint on rusted steel. Each piece is inspired by trees I’ve encountered in nature The tension of splitting bark and what pulls under the surface, the subtle curves and swirls, and the camouflage pepper moths that blend into the skin all inspired this body of work.

Always lush and inviting, balancing shade and sun. The leaves of palms are intricate and artful from open to close. I delight in cutting these playful shapes in steel and aging them with rust and acrylic paint. These pieces are all mounted on steel.
Somewhere in my crooked mind, among enthusiasm for profanity and scattered pages from Geek Love and The Museum of Extraordinary Things, I developed rather dark visions of dimming lights, distressed colors and the fading beauty of the carnival midway. From these visions come games never won. Their function is to draw you to distraction, please your mind, tempt your curiosity with a cheeky wink and make you stop and play for a moment.
